Battery energy storage systems (BESS) play an increasingly important role in the global energy transition, as they enable electricity to be stored and released when power is needed the most, thereby balancing the supply and demand of electricity and improving grid reliability.
Shikun & Binui Energy currently operates Saticoy BESS, one of the largest grid-scale battery energy storage systems in California. The 100 MW/400 MWh zero-emission facility, completed in 2021, features 142 Tesla Megapacks that help reduce grid outages and deliver power during peak demand.
Pumped storage hydroelectric systems use electricity from the electrical power grid to operate hydroelectric turbines that run-in reverse, pumping water to a storage reservoir. The water is then sent back down through the turbines to generate electricity when needed.
Shikun & Binui Energy built and operates the first – and currently only, pumped storage facility in Israel. The Gilboa pumped storage facility has a capacity of 300 MW / 3,000 MWh and plays an important role in managing demand on the electricity grid, streamlining grid operation during peak hours.
Molten salt storage systems provide long-duration storage for solar thermal plants. The salts are heated and then stored in an insulating container, and when energy is needed the salt is pumped into a steam generator that generates power by converting thermal energy to electricity.
Shikun & Binui Energy developed, constructed and operates the Ashalim solar thermal plant in the Negev desert that uses parabolic trough technology and a 4.5-hour molten-salt storage system which enables it to provide an additional renewable energy every day at full capacity, even in cloudy weather or after sunset.
